Cooking on a Boat
Filling for Crab and Shrimp Eggrolls
There’s nothing like cooking out on the water — the breeze, the views, and the joy of making a great meal while floating on your favorite lake. But let’s be real: boat kitchens are small, space is limited, and the last thing I want is a hot galley on a sunny day. That’s why I’ve learned a few tricks to keep it simple, stress-free, and still delicious.
Here’s how I prep and cook fabulous meals while soaking up the lake vibes.
1.
Prep at Home — It’s a Must
Before I even step on the boat, I do all the prep work at home. I chop, marinate, mix, and sometimes I will go ahead and cook some dishes and just reheat. By doing these things, I get to enjoy my happy place instead of being in the kitchen prepping.
Here’s what I usually prep ahead:
Chopped veggies
Marinated meats (in Ziplock bags)
Cooked rice or pasta ready to heat and serve
This means less mess, fewer dishes, and more time to enjoy the water.
2.
Ziplock Bags Make Everything Easier
Ziplock bags are a boat cook’s best friend. I use them for storing marinated meats, chopped produce, and even leftovers. They save space in the cooler or fridge and make cleanup super simple — just toss when you’re done.
3.
One-Pot Meals for the Win
On a boat, fewer dishes = more happiness. That’s why I love making one-pot meals. Whether I’m using a skillet, a Dutch oven, or slow cooker, I aim for meals that go from prep to plate with minimal fuss.
Some of my favorite one-pot wonders:
Shrimp with Veggies
One pan Tacos
Salmon and Rice Bowl
My Grill Is My Best Friend
When it’s hot out, the last thing I want is to fire up heat inside the boat. That’s when my boat grill saves the day. I use it for just about everything — salmon, veggies, pizza, even mac and cheese.
Pro tip: I use disposable foil pans on the grill to cook or reheat meals without creating a mess. It keeps things tidy and makes cleanup a breeze.
5.
Keep It Simple and Tasty
Cooking on a boat is all about simplicity. I stick to meals with a handful of ingredients and big flavor. Nothing fancy, just real good food that’s easy to make and even easier to enjoy.
Some of my go-to boat meals:
BBQ pull pork sliders with pre-made slaw
Grilled drumettes with my fav sauces
Pizza on the grill
One-skillet pasta tossed with veggies and shrimp
Final Thoughts
Cooking on a boat doesn’t have to be complicated. With a little prep at home, smart packing, and a trusty grill, you can make amazing meals that keep everyone full and happy — without heating up your boat or washing a pile of dishes.
